Market Your Book With Video on a Budget

By Softiqq Solutions  ◆  October 2026  ◆  6 min read

Video is the most effective book marketing an indie author can do, and it is also the one most authors skip because they assume it costs too much. It does not have to. With one good trailer and a free posting habit, you can run a serious video marketing operation for the price of the trailer alone. Here is the practical plan.

Start with one asset: the trailer

Everything in this plan flows from a single cinematic book trailer. That is your one real expense, and it is a one time cost that keeps working for years. A trailer gives you professional footage, a hook, music, and branding in one package. Without it, you are filming yourself talking into a phone and hoping for the best. With it, you look like a publisher.

If even that is out of reach right now, start simple: film three short clips of yourself talking about the book's best moment. It will not match a real trailer, but it teaches you the posting habit, which is the skill that matters most.

Cut it into a dozen clips

Here is the multiplier most authors miss. One 60 second trailer contains at least ten usable clips: the hook alone, each major scene, the best line of voiceover, the end card. Cut them into vertical 15 to 30 second pieces and you have two to three weeks of daily posts from a single production. Ask whoever makes your trailer for the raw scenes or the platform cuts. Our packages include them, because a trailer you can only post once is a trailer half wasted.

Spend once on the trailer. Spend your time, not more money, turning it into a month of content.

Post where it costs nothing

Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts are free distribution to millions of readers. The algorithm does not care about your budget. It cares whether people watch to the end. Post one clip a day for thirty days and watch which hooks hold attention. Reply to every comment in the first hour, because early engagement is what pushes a clip beyond your followers. This costs you thirty minutes a day and zero dollars, and for most indie authors it outperforms everything else they have tried.

Put the trailer where buyers decide

Free social reach is the top of the funnel. The bottom is everywhere a buying decision happens, and most of those placements are free too:

  • Amazon A+ Content. If you are in KDP, you can add video to your book page. A trailer here plays for shoppers already holding their wallets.
  • Your author website. Embed the trailer above the fold on your book page. Visitors who watch stay longer and buy more often.
  • Your email list. New subscribers get the trailer in the welcome email. It is the fastest possible introduction to your work.
  • Your social profiles. Pin the trailer to the top of every profile. Every new visitor meets your book at its best.

When paid ads are worth it

Here is the rule: never pay to promote content you have not tested for free first. Run your clips organically for a month. One or two will clearly outperform the rest on watch time and comments. Put a small budget, even five dollars a day, behind exactly those clips on Meta or TikTok, targeted at readers of comparable authors. You are no longer gambling. You are amplifying a proven winner, which is the only kind of ad spend that makes sense on a budget. We covered the organic side in our list of ways authors use short video, and this is the paid layer on top of it.

Quick answers

Budget questions, answered

How much should an indie author spend on video marketing?

Start with one strong trailer, which is a one time cost, then spend your time instead of your money: organic posting costs nothing. Add paid ads only after your organic clips show you which hooks and audiences respond.

Can I market my book with video for free?

The distribution is free. Reels, TikTok, and Shorts cost nothing to post on, and one trailer can be cut into weeks of clips. The only real cost is the trailer itself, or the time to make a simple one yourself.

When should an author pay for book ads?

When you have proof something works. If an organic clip gets strong watch time and comments, putting ad spend behind that exact clip is the safest bet in book marketing. Never pay to promote content you have not tested for free first.
